Cemetery

The District of Lillooet municipal cemetery was established as a Cemetery on March 2, 1938, by Provincial Order-in-Council No. 248, but was utilized long before then, with the oldest grave dating back to 1887.

When the cemetery was established, there were 179 graves in the Cemetery and a Cemetery Register was initiated with the names of 177 persons whose remains were believed to be buried therein. Of the above-mentioned 179 graves:

  • 43 were marked by head-markers of stone or wood,
  • 84 were known, but not marked.
This makes for 127 identified graves, leaving 52 graves unidentified and 50 names in the Register not allotted to graves. If the 50 names are correct, there remained two more graves on March 2, 1938 for which no names were available.
